I admit, I don’t know what it is like to be a TCK.
I was raised in rural America, lived in the same house growing up, had the same friends, spoke the same language until my family moved my senior year in high school.
So when my TCK daughter says in view of college looming ahead, “Why do I have to be the one who hides and forgets my past?”
I have thought about what to say in response.
Along the way I have heard other TCKs say, “Why couldn’t I have had a normal life? Why couldn’t I grow up with friends all around me? Why did my parents bring me to the USA and dump me? Why do I have to be so different? Why can’t I be like everyone else?”
I think those are pretty typical teen questions no matter where you were brought up. But admittedly, TCKs are a different breed of birds:-)
So to answer “Why,?” I’ll say what I said to Lilly. Why? Because God has a plan for you, and this different-ness is part of His plan.
Jesus said as much to Peter, who also wondered “why me?”
“So Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, and what about this man?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!'” John 21:21,22
